Islands of Loneliness, is a feature documentary currently in production about immigrants and mental health. What happens when immigrants leave everything behind: family, culture, traditions and their native country to come to the United States to start a new life? Islands of Loneliness examines the chronic stress and trauma associated with crossing the border examining different decades from the 1980's to the present.
The documentary, features interviews with mental health industry experts, persons who are immigrants and have experienced mental health challenges from chronic stress to trauma to depression. This film is made possible by a generous grant from Sonoma State University. The documentary is directed by Malinalli López and produced together with Dr. Daniel Melero-Malpica and Sonoma State Students studying the intersectionality of race, class and gender.
