Palabras y Salud, features interviews with scholars, mental health industry experts, and persons who are immigrants to Latinx, Chicanas and Chicanos who have been in the US for several generations who have experienced mental health challenges from chronic stress to trauma to depression.
This series is made possible by a generous seed grant from Sonoma State University. The documentary is directed by Malinalli López and produced together with Dr. Daniel Melero-Malpica and Sonoma State Students studying the intersectionality of race, class and gender.
Palabras y Salud is an episodic television series in Spanish currently in production about immigrants and mental health. What happens when immigrants leave everything behind: family, culture, traditions, and their native country to come to the United States to start a new life? The series examines the chronic stress and trauma associated with crossing the border examining different decades from the 1980s to the present.
